UMzimkhulu Youth in Business

Young entrepreneurs of Umzimkhulu were left empowered with knowledge and tips on how to start businesses during the launch of the Youth in Business Forum at Turf Grounds in Umzimkhulu. During the event, Umzimkhulu Local Municipality Speaker Cllr. Jabulile Msiya, accompanied by the Local Economic Development committee were also present in support of the launch. During her address, Cllr. Msiya said they are satisfied by the initiative and it is motivating to see the youth taking business seriously. She says it is easier for potential funders to invest when business is visibly seen to be moving forward. Msiya also commended the LED Committee for creating a conducive environment for the youth.

The Umzimkhulu Youth in business is an association that serves to develop and capacitate youth owned businesses in Umzimkhulu. It will create a database that will serve as a support structure for the entrepreneurs. The young entrepreneurs also came out in numbers to join hands in the business social networking youth group. The establishment of this group aims to provide mutual support and assistance for the youth in business. Amongst the attendees, the event’s sponsor, Nedbank Boxer Branch as well as SEDA and Harry Gwala Youth Council also joined hands in support of the movement. The entrepreneurs were each given an opportunity to present themselves and their businesses.

Amongst the challenges addressed, the young entrepreneurs said that they struggle with getting support within the community. They also struggle with financial assistance and obtaining information about emerging business opportunities. Umzimkhulu Local Municipality Youth Officer Mpumelelo Sikhosana assured the youth that through his office and the Local Economic Development office, sufficient support will be granted to the youth. The Local Economic Development Portfolio Head, Councilor Bhekamahlongwa Lukhakhayi applauded the municipality for opening a gateway for the youth.
